Berlin video store owner Micha Hartung (Charly Hübner) is on the verge of bankruptcy. But out of nowhere, he unwittingly becomes a hero to all of Germany: when a journalist stylises him as the mastermind behind the largest mass escape from the GDR on the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, his life is suddenly turned upside down. As an unwitting impostor, Micha becomes entangled in a web of half-truths and outright lies.

Soviet Union, 1937. Thousands of letters from prisoners who were wrongfully accused by the regime are burned in a prison cell. His pursuit of justice takes him all the way to the office of the Attorney General in Moscow.
