As if Kevin Smith’s CLERKS went to Japan – but with splatter. The feature debut by Yusuke Iwasaki, himself the son of a shop owner, won the FIPRESCI Prize at the Berlinale and delivers a pitch-black, deadpan look at the dark side of a dehumanized society. Echoing the nightmarish atmosphere of EXIT 8 and BACKROOMS, it leaves audiences with one unmistakable message: consumption can be deadly.
