After spending 19 years in prison, Jean Valjean is released and decides to do good in his community; under a false identity, he becomes a respected member of high society. On her deathbed, the working-class woman Fantine asks him to rescue her daughter, Cosette, from the clutches of the cruel Thénardiers. But his past catches up with him once again.
