The biopic sketches a slice of two lives: One is about the revue dancer Lili, who suddenly has to take responsibility for her mentally handicapped daughter. The other tells the story of Maria Montessori, who due to conventions and her role as a woman in science, does not admit to her illegitimate son. Their paths cross in Rome. As Lili's daughter makes initial progress at Maria's institute, a quiet friendship develops between the women.
