Shana has boundless energy – which she certainly needs, given the avalanche of difficulties she faces: She’s the outsider in her Moroccan-Jewish family, and she’s mistreated by her imprisoned boyfriend, whose drug deals she has taken over. But she can count on the support of her friends. A ring she inherits from her grandmother, along with illustrations from a book about the biblical plagues of Egypt, lends the film a touch of magical realism.
