Harry annoys Sally & Sally annoys Harry. That was the case during their involuntary 18-hour trip to New York, and remains so five years later when they meet by chance on the plane. Another five years later - both in the throes of relationship frustration - the mismatched couple, more out of necessity than anything else, offer proof to the contrary of Harry's favourite thesis: "Men and women can never be friends - sex always gets in the way." The two are the very last to realise that they are basically made for each other.
