The Musikfest Berlin is the international orchestra festival of the Berliner Festspiele, organized in cooperation with the Berlin Philharmonic Foundation. From August 28 to September 23, the world’s best symphony orchestras and vocal ensembles will be performing in Berlin.

The Berliner Festspiele will open this year’s Musikfest Berlin with György Ligeti’s opera “Le Grand Macabre,” while also celebrating its 75th anniversary. Ligeti was one of the defining composers of the festival, which was first held in 1951 as the “Berliner Festwochen.” The Hungarian-Austrian composer is also known for his film scores: Stanley Kubrick used Ligeti’s avant-garde works– based on micro-polyphony – in his 1968 classic 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEE (initially without permission), thereby cementing the composer’s name in pop culture once and for all.

As part of the Berliner Festspiele, the film will be screened once again on the big screen at the newly renovated Kino International in Christie laser projection and Dolby 7.1 sound.
