There were 17 Stasi remand prisons and over 70 juvenile work camps in the GDR. The 45-minute documentary SPLITTER IM KOPF – HAFTBEDINGUNGEN IN DER DDR (Splinters in the Head – Prison Conditions in the GDR) gives a voice to four people who were imprisoned for weeks and years on charges of “subversive agitation” and “difficulty in being educated.” Their lives were turned upside down overnight; they lost their families as well as their economic and social livelihoods. The writer Siegmar Faust, the photographer Katrin Büchel, the auto mechanic Thomas Hannemann, and the doctor and singer-songwriter Karl-Heinz Bomberg describe their arrests and experiences in detention.

This will be followed by a Q&A with director Prof. Jürgen Haase and protagonist Dr. Karl-Heinz Bomberg.

About

Katrin Büchel, Karl Heinz Bomberg, Siegmar Faust, and Thomas Hannemann were imprisoned and interned for weeks and years in the GDR on charges of “subversive agitation,” “attempted defection,” or “difficulty in discipline.” In SPLITTER IM KOPF, they give a powerful account of the methods of physical and psychological repression, the feelings of vulnerability, and the consequences – which include depression, claustrophobia, mistrust, and psychosomatic disorders.
