On January 6, visionary director Béla Tarr passed away in Budapest. His exploration of the abysses of human existence in the context of civilizational decline was initially focused on the Eastern Bloc, especially his native Hungary, until this dystopian vision came to be read as a general metaphor for the culpability of humanity in our present day. Deeply disturbing but also visually enigmatic images in long, hypnotic shots capture a disoriented human being thrown into modernity.
