Castella is a successful entrepreneur who has little interest in culture. However, when his wife forces him to attend a performance of “Bérénice” one evening, he is captivated by the script and falls in love with the leading actress, Clara. He tries to join her circle of artist friends, but finds it difficult. He tells the wrong jokes and ignores the fact that people find him stuffy and embarrassing. Soon, however, Castella's life is seriously disrupted by love and art.
