On the occasion of International Holocaust Remembrance Day and, in Germany, the Day of Remembrance for the Victims of National Socialism.

‎‎

Nelly & Nadine is a remarkable story about the suffering of war, mysteries, love against all odds and the healing power of music; about well-kept secrets and the complicated family histories of concentration camp survivors who are still trying to come to terms with the ghosts of the past.

‎‎

The film will be followed by a discussion with Andrea Genest, director of the Ravensbrück Memorial Site, moderated by Antje Bernhardt from bernhardt-bildung.

‎‎

Nelly & Nadine is the incredible love story of two women who fall in love on Christmas Eve 1944 – in the midst of the horrors of the Ravensbrück concentration camp.

‎‎

In 2022, Nelly's granddaughter Sylvie decided to open Nelly and Nadine's hidden private archive and discovered their remarkable story. Among the items were photos, love letters and film reels.

‎‎

The archive also contains a diary written by Nelly. In these previously unpublished personal notes, she recounts her life story, including details about falling in love amid the horrors of a concentration camp, the complicated reunion with Nadine after the war, the decision to move to Venezuela to live freely in their relationship – and to return to Europe in the early 1970s and spend the last years of their lives in Brussels.

‎‎

An event organised by the Berlin State Archives in cooperation with the Ernst Reuter Archive Foundation and Cinema Paris.

About

An incredible love story of two women who fall in love on Christmas Eve 1944 in Ravensbrück concentration camp. Although they are separated in the final months of the war, Nelly and Nadine later find each other again and spend the rest of their lives together. For many years, their love story was kept secret, even from some of their closest family members. Now Nelly's granddaughter Sylvie has decided to open her long-closed private archive.
