During the Stalinist purges of the 1930s, prisoners' letters are routinely burned to isolate the condemned from the outside world. When young prosecutor Alexander Korniev nevertheless receives a letter from an imprisoned colleague, he suspects a conspiracy and embarks on a dangerous path to uncover the truth.
