Literatur LIVE: Jella Haase, Albrecht Schuch & Marion Brasch
Thomas Brasch’s “Der schöne 27. September” - a collage of text, scenes, and film
Every year, Jella Haase, Albrecht Schuch, and Marion Brasch come together to perform Thomas Brasch’s poem “Der schöne 27. September” (”The Beautiful 27th of September”) on stage as a collage of text, scenes, and film—and, of course, on September 27.
“Der schöne 27. September” is a poem by Thomas Brasch. He wrote it on a seemingly insignificant day and recounts in it all the things he had failed to do that day. It is one of the most beautiful poems by the writer, playwright, and filmmaker, of whom theater director Claus Peymann said that his life had been a “wild novel,” “a novel about East and West.”
Born in exile in England to Jewish-Communist parents, he grew up and became a rebel in the GDR, which he left in 1976, never to settle in the FRG either, and certainly not in reunified Germany.
In his poems, plays, and films, he confronts social contradictions with sharp wit, power, and originality, with an urgency that is more relevant than ever.
In her debut novel Ab jetzt ist Ruhe, Marion Brasch tells the story of her family. Here, she focuses on her older brother Thomas. What did he long for, and what caused him friction? What drove him away from his family and ultimately from his country?
In a collage of text, scenes, and film, she has woven these questions into a story that she will bring to the stage on a beautiful September 27th, together with Jella Haase and Albrecht Schuch.
