Two films about a thirst for adventure, discovery, and the courage to make dreams come true. The Surf Film Night double feature: GUTS and HER WAVE at the ARTE Summer Cinema at the Kulturforum – with protagonist Lena Kemna (HER WAVE) in attendance.

What happens when women leave traditional gender roles behind and follow only their dreams? Patrizia and Marie decided to find out and set off on a 20,000-kilometer off-road surfari from Biarritz, France, to Guinea-Bissau – with nothing more in their luggage than an old Jeep, four surfboards, and a mission: to capture the stories of inspiring women who are redefining their place in society throughout Northwest Africa. What unfolded along this long, dusty route was pure magic. From Morocco’s first female mountain guide to the women’s rights activist in Nouakchott to the young surf collective in Dakar– they all demonstrated that when women find the courage to break free from conventions and listen to their own voices, a revolution begins – not just for themselves, but also for their communities, their countries, and the world. GUTS is an unfiltered, empowering adventure. It is an ode to freedom. It is a hymn to that gentle yet powerful synergy that arises when women come together. It is a call to embrace fears and have the courage to listen.

In three chapters structured around the phases of the moon, HER WAVE follows Germany’s big-wave surfer Lena Kemna through her second season in Nazaré. Rather than following a classic hero’s journey, the film offers a realistic, gritty, artistic, and visually stunning portrayal of a winter marked by extreme highs and lows.
